Group Five

Group Five is an extensive highly complex group of companies, providing various challenges toward the successful implementation of an ISO 14001 based environmental management system. Environmental Assurance (Pty) Ltd was appointed to design, implement and assist with the implementation of the EMS across all Group Five business units at a National level. This all inclusive service includes the development and implementation of systems components, the training and awareness of staff at all levels and ultimately the alignment of the ISO EMS with the strategic reporting requirements of the company.

SACMO (Pty) Ltd

The South African Coal Mining Operations is a Royal Bafokeng initiative and appointed Environmental Assurance (Pty) Ltd in 2007 to ensure that the total operation is environmentally legally compliant. Services currently being rendered include the conversion of old order EMPR’s, the conclusion of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for mining extensions and railway sidings, the development of an ISO 14001 based Environmental Management System (EMS) and continuous rehabilitation and closure cost assessments. Another specialist support being provided is the Integrated Water Use License Application (IWULA) on each one of the operational areas. This includes detailed geo hydrological, water balance and waste modelling. A well established public forum, which meets every 2 months, assists to drive and improve the overall service and Environmental performance of the operation. Strategic services include reporting to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) Sustainable Reporting Index (SRI).

Environmental Assurance (Pty) Ltd has developed an on site monitoring and measurement assessment sign board. The Board allows visual connection to specific environmental aspects, reference to control procedures and ultimately a performance status based on the robot system.

MECHEM

Mechem is a private company that was originally founded in 1960 as the Applied Chemistry Unit of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and is now a subsidiary of Denel. The mainstay business of Mechem is the location and destruction of land mines and unexploded weaponry (collectively known as mine action services) and the detection of contraband goods such as drugs, explosives, and animal products. Other secondary services include stock pile destruction; mine awareness training; land mine victim support (Mechem has developed Afrifoot which is an artificial foot to help restore victims mobility); battle area clearance (removal of unexploded ordnance after conflict); advocating for banning of mines; and sale of mine armoured vehicles. Environmental Assurance was appointed to provide specialist assistance in the implementation of an intergrated ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001.
